Taylor, Russell sign with MSSU

Stephanie Taylor has been playing soccer since she was 4 years old.
“I never missed a year,” she said. “I liked the intensity of it. You’re always going ... and the physical part of it.”
Randi Russell didn’t start playing soccer until her sophomore year at Joplin High School.
“Stephanie, one of my really good friends, just wanted me to play,” Russell said. “I really didn’t have that much of an interest in it until I started playing goalie. She just thought I’d be a good goalie, so I tried it.”
On Thursday afternoon at Joplin High School, Taylor, a midfielder, and Russell signed letters-of-intent to join the Missouri Southern women’s soccer program.
“I pretty much had my mind set on Southern,” Taylor said. “It seems like the best choice.
And, she is quite familiar with the MSSU campus since her father, Steve, is the school’s athletic facilities and operations coordinator.
“I wanted to stay close to my family,” Stephanie said. “I decided I could stay close to home and play soccer.”
“Stephanie is small, but she makes up for it with her heart,” Joplin head coach Ed Miller said. “She works really hard in the field ... she has the skill to play center-midfielder for us, which is one of the key positions on our team.
“She gets some assists, she gets some shots, she sets things up for us on offense. Defensively she takes on the other team’s better player. She runs both way for us, shuts them down and sets things up for us.”
Russell will also pay softball for the Lions.
“I’m really looking forward to (playing two sports),” she said. “I’ll be very busy, but it’s going to be fun.
“Randi is a great competitor, always wanting to learn more and more about the position,” Miller said.
