sports@joplinglobe.com NEVADA, Mo. — Joplin and College Heights Christian finished 1-2 in both prep track divisions of the Nevada Invitational on Saturday. Girls team scores were Joplin 127, CHC and Nevada 113, Liberal 96 and El Dorado Springs 66. Joplin efforts included firsts by sophomore Ashlie Shimmen in the shot put and discus and seconds by classmate Taylor Tyrrell in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Junior Emily Beaver and senior Brittney Lewis sparkled for CHC. Lewis won the 100 and 400, finished runner-up in the 200 and joined Beaver, junior Carly Cole and freshman Hannah Braeckel in winning the 4 x 400 relay. Beaver also swept the 800 and 1,600. Lea Sorrick, a sophomore, also won the pole vault for the Cougars. Joplin’s Mike Honeywell, a senior, won the 100 and the pole vault by clearing a personal best 13 feet, 7 inches. Honeywell also anchored the winning 4 x 200 relay team (the first three members were sophomores Gates Sanders, Trey Weathers and Dylan Rapp). Honeywell ran the first leg on the winning 4 x 400 (joining senior Logan Simon, Rapp and sophomore Ron King). Simon also won the hurdle events, Sanders the 200 and 400 and senior Tyler Burgess the shot put and discus. The CHC boys received a 1-2 finish from freshman Caleb Hoover and sophomore Josh Carter in the open 1,600. Junior Alex Moore and Hoover placed 1-2 in the 3,200. Carter, freshman Trenton Morris, Moore and Hoover won the 4 x 800 relay. Final team scores in the boys division weren’t available.
