awelch@joplinglobe.com Labette Community College volleyball coach Jennifer Ginn believes she nailed down the Cardinal setter for the next two seasons on Tuesday. Ginn came to Joplin to secure the signature of College Heights Christian senior Kelsey Myers on a letter of intent. “I’m a little nervous to hear that, but I’m confident I can do it,” Myers said Wednesday. Said CHC coach Karla Gaines: “Kelsey is the kind of player that can come into a tight situation, keep a cool head and get the job done. She led our team for two years with her serve and I’m looking forward to seeing her play at the next level.” Labette Community College is a member of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and, for volleyball, is in the Division II East Division, Ginn said. “I really liked the people. ... the whole atmosphere,” Myers said of her visit to the Parsons school. “The players I met made me feel welcome. They were cool. Coach (Jaime) Green was a big factor (in choosing Labette).” Green, who did her student teaching at CHC, is the women’s basketball coach at Labette. Ginn, who also is the sports information director at Labette, is in her second year and is the Cardinals’ first fulltime volleyball coach. She finished 13-27 overall last season with a squad of nine that included one sophomore. Ginn’s veterans for next season should include two Southeast Kansas products in Lauren Miller of Galena and Cecilia Semrad of Erie. “Kelsey will be our setter,” Ginn said. “She’s extremely athletic. She had court sense and great hands during her tryout (at Labette). She’s intelligent. I believe she’ll fit in perfectly.” The 5-foot-6 Myers, a senior captain, was a three-year starter — mostly as a hitter — and was on the varsity roster for district play as a freshman. Gaines said that Myers had the top serving percentage for the Cougars as a junior and senior. She tied the school record for serving percentage. She paced the team in serving points as a senior. Myers, who plays second base for the CHC baseball team, plans to bolster her volleyball skills during the summer with the Cougars in camps at McDonald County High School and Missouri State.
