ROLLA, Mo. — Chris Green and Jacob Garrison combined on a three-hitter as Missouri Southern upended Missouri Science & Technology 6-3 Wednesday afternoon to earn a split in their baseball doubleheader.
The Miners scored in every inning but the fourth and rolled to a 13-3 victory in the opener.
The Lions (18-26) are home this weekend for a four-game series against Missouri Western. Doubleheaders will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. With two weekends remaining, the Lions and Griffons are tied for fourth place (15-13) in the MIAA standings.
Green, freshman right-hander from Carl Junction, gave up two runs and two hits in five innings, walked four and struck out four in his first decision of the season. Garrison, senior right-hander from St. Mary’s-Colgan in Pittsburg, allowed one run, one hit and fanned three in the last two innings for his second save.
Lee Hall went 3-for-4 to lead the Lions’ eight-hit attack, and Juan Hernandez and Matthew Mantle contributed two hits apiece.
The Lions scored twice in the second inning to break a 1-1 deadlock. Mantle was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Hall’s single through the right side. C.J. Matthews walked with two outs to load the bases, and Derek Ezell singled to right-center to score two runs.
Missouri Southern scored its last three runs in the fifth. After three walks loaded the bases with one out, Mantle’s single to center and Hall’s infield hit each scored a run, and another run scored on a throwing error.
Eaf Redden and Andrew Vance stroked three hits apiece, and Vance and Brandon Cogan each had two runs batted in to lead the Miners (17-20) in the first game.
The Miners scored three runs in the second inning without getting a hit to take a 4-1 lead. The inning included two walks by starter Ryan Estes (1-3), a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and a run-scoring groundout by Cody Bass.
Ezell went 3-for-4 with two singles and a double for the Lions. Ezell’s single to center drove in the Lions’ first run in the first inning.
Jeff Katchmar socked a two-run home run to right, his third of the season, in the Lions’ third.
