SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Joplin’s John Lazenby, Michael McCreary and Alan Liu won championships, leading the Eagles to a second-place finish Thursday in the Ozark Conference tennis tournament at the Cooper Complex.
Glendale grabbed the team title with 38 points, two more than the Eagles. The Falcons picked up two first places, one second and one fourth while the Eagles had a third place and fifth place in addition to their two titles.
Lazenby dropped only six games en route to the No. 1 singles championship. He defeated Glendale’s Paul Nahon 6-2, 6-0 in the final.
“John lost to Nahon the last three times they played,” Joplin coach Sean McWilliams said. “That was a big win for him.”
McCreary and Liu teamed up to win No. 1 doubles, losing just three games in three matches. They downed Anderson-Burgio of Kickapoo 6-1, 6-1 in the championship round.
“Michael and Alan winning No. 1 doubles was another great win for us,” McWilliams said. “Winning both No. 1 flights shows how strong we are at the top of our lineup. We have a few things to work on and prepare for district (next week), but we’ll be ready.”
Joplin’s Chris Ingle finished third at No. 2 singles. He rebounded from a 10-8 semifinal loss to Michael Moore of West Plains with a 10-0 decision over Lebanon’s Matt Bourn in the third-place match.
At No. 2 doubles, the Eagles’ Cody Maples-Matt McCreary lost their opening match but won their next two to place fifth. They downed Lamar-Jones of Waynesville 8-1 in their final match.
TRACK AND FIELD
Eagles place second
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Joplin High School boys track team, getting firsts from underclassmen Gates Sanders and Colbie Snyder, placed second behind Waynesville in the Ozark Conference meet at Kennedy Stadium.
The Joplin girls were fifth in their division. West Plains defeated Waynesville 119-108 for the championship.
The Waynesville boys tallied 143 points to 94 for the Eagles. West Plains (89), Lebanon (88) and Kickapoo (87) completed the top five teams.
“We’re capable of a few more points, but for the most part our kids performed very well,” Joplin coach Paul Chambers said of the boys effort. “Waynesville is full of athletes and has won four titles in a row.. We beat them by one point in 2004 for the championship.”
Sanders, a sophomore, won the 200 in 22.99 seconds. Snyder, a junior, cleared 14 feet to win the pole vault.
Joplin senior Tyler Burgess placed second in the shot put with a toss of 47 feet 1/2 inch.
The Eagles’ 4x200 relay team was nipped by Waynesville for first. Turning in the 1:32.73 for Joplin were freshman Sanquez Moss, Sanders, senior Logan Simon and senior Mike Honeywell.

BASEBALL
Branson 5, Carl Junction 4
CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Branson plated four runs in the top of the sixth to win the nonconference game.
The Bulldogs led 4-1 with two outs in the sixth. But a pair of walks and another pair of wild pitches allowed Branson to score four times and take a 5-4 lead. Chase Westfall’s triple was the inning’s key hit.
The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before Branson reliever Mike Campton thwarted the rally.
“I feel like we had our chances to win,” Bulldogs coach Flav Darnell said. “We were winning 4-1 with five outs to go and we weren’t able to get it done.”
Jon Michel slugged four hits for the Bulldogs and picked up two RBI.
Webb City 13, Seneca 6
SENECA, Mo. — Chance Sossamon and Patrick Drake combined for 10 runs batted in to power Webb City past Seneca in a nonconference game.
