FINDLAY, Ohio — Missouri Southern, behind freshman Jamie Voegeli’s par-72 low of the day, moved into third place after the opening round of the NCAA Division II Central Golf Regional.
The event, being held at the Red Hawk Run Golf Course, continues with 18 holes today before winding up Wednesday with the final 18 holes.
Washburn carded a 298 for the first-round lead and was followed by Missouri Western, 306; Missouri Southern, 308; Southwest Baptist, 309; Upper Iowa, 311; Central Missouri, 316; Fort Hays, 319; and Winona State, 320.
Other Southern players and their opening-day finish were sophomores David Eddy and Adam Nelson, tied for 19th at 78; freshman Seve Smith, tied for 25th, at 80; and senior Ben Perry, 30th, with an 82.
Although Pittsburg State did not qualify for the regional, the Gorillas’ Keith Capps did as an individual and shot an 83 Monday.
Ferris State leads the Great Lakes Region, being played on the same course, with the same score as Washburn. Winners of each regional, as well as the top team, regardless of region, will qualify for the national tournament.
