Briefs: Purdy baseball team downs Pierce City



PURDY, Mo. — Derek Dailey’s strong outing and an early two-run single from Trent Goetz led Purdy to a 4-2 baseball victory against Pierce City on Monday.

Dailey, Purdy’s fourth starter, threw a complete game, allowing an earned run on six hits and a walk. He struck out five and improved to 2-1.

Purdy (12-7) took the lead in the second inning on Chris Bennett’s RBI double. Goetz’s single then drove two home.

Goetz finished 2-for-4 and Blake Williams was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Brady Hayward was 2-for-3 for Pierce City (11-7).

Eagles soccer team gets third seed

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Joplin High School’s girls soccer team has been seeded third in the MSHSAA Class 2 District 12 Tournament scheduled next week at Kickapoo.

Kickapoo and Ozark, seeded first and second respectively, have byes in the six-team tourney.

Joplin will debut against Parkview at 5 p.m. Monday. Fourth-seeded Neosho then faces Nixa at 7 to complete the opening round matchups.

Semifinals will be played at 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 15. The championship match is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 17.

JYFA schedules registration dates

The Joplin Youth Football Association has set its only registration dates for the fall 2007 youth football season. Registration will begin inside Kaminsky Gymnasium on May 18 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and conclude May 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The registration fee is $55 per player.

In the inaugural year for JYFA last season, the association successfully formed youth football teams to represent Joplin against towns in the Southwest Conference. In 2007, teams will be expected to play seven or eight games plus a week of playoffs.

Official sizing and weigh-ins will take place during equipment check-out July 30-31. Practices are slated to begin Aug. 1 while games start Sept. 1.
