sports@joplinglobe.com Colin Bado, T.J. Britton and Jessica Selby-Tallman received the top three awards Tuesday at the Missouri Southern Lionbacker Awards ceremony. Bado, a senior football player from McKinney, Texas, received the E.O. and Virginia Humphrey Award. The award is based on highest respect for the school, outstanding athletic ability and leadership and respect for teammates and students. Bado, a senior, spent this semester studying in France. A marketing major, he has four consecutive semesters with a 4.0 grade point average and has a 3.84 cumulative GPA. Bado has been named to the MIAA’s all-academic team in 2005-07, and he was a National Football Foundation Draddy Award (academic Heisman) semifinalist in 2007. The NFF recognizes 150 semifinalists from more than 80,000 football players nationwide. On the football field, Bado earned all-conference and all-region honors last season, and his 250 career receptions are a Missouri Southern record and rank third in MIAA history and 13th in NCAA Division II. Britton and Selby-Tallman were named the Lions’ 2007-08 Male and Female athletes of the year. Britton, a senior basketball and track athlete, was a unanimous pick to the MIAA’s all-defensive team this year and has been a two-year starter for the Lions’ basketball team. In track, Britton, a native of Poplar Bluff, Mo., competed in the 400 and 800 meters, the 4x400 relay and the long jump. He is ranked 12th nationally in the 800 this year. Selby-Tallman, a senior thrower in track and field, won her third-consecutive Female Athlete of the Year Award. Selby-Tallman, from Galena, Mo., is a four-time indoor and four-time outdoor MIAA shot put champion. She is a four-time All-American indoors in the shot put and an All-American in the shot and hammer outdoors. She has won 12 MIAA championships (eight shot put, one weight throw, three hammer). She finished second twice in the Division II indoor shot put, and she ranks first nationally outdoors this year in the shot put and hammer. The most valuable player award and Lionbacker Award of Excellence was presented to an athlete in each sport.
