Published May 07, 2008 01:14 am - PITTSBURG, Kan. — Jeff Hafer, an assistant men’s basketball coach the last seven seasons at Pittsburg State, has resigned. “I appreciate the opportunity Coach (Gene) Iba, (athletics director) Chuck Broyles and (PSU president) Dr. (Tom) Bryant all gave to me,” Hafer said in a press release. “I’ve enjoyed being a part of the Gorilla family. The timing is right now for me and my family to pursue other interests. sports@joplinglobe.com PITTSBURG, Kan. — Jeff Hafer, an assistant men’s basketball coach the last seven seasons at Pittsburg State, has resigned. “I appreciate the opportunity Coach (Gene) Iba, (athletics director) Chuck Broyles and (PSU president) Dr. (Tom) Bryant all gave to me,” Hafer said in a press release. “I’ve enjoyed being a part of the Gorilla family. The timing is right now for me and my family to pursue other interests. I’m leaving with great memories, and I’ve cherished my time in Pittsburg.” Hafer, 30, served two years as a graduate assistant coach for the Gorillas before becoming a full-time assistant five years ago. He was elevated to assistant head coach on Feb. 1. “We deeply regret losing someone as important as Jeff has been to our program over the past seven years,” Iba said. “He has been integral to any amount of success that we have had during that time. That being said, we certainly wish Jeff and his family the very best in all of their endeavors in the future.” The Gorillas earned NCAA Tournament berths in 2005 and 2007 and finished second in the MIAA Postseason Tournament in 2007. Hafer, a 1996 Joplin High School graduate, averaged 19 points a game his junior and senior seasons for the Eagles. He played 112 games during a four-year career at the University of Missouri. He earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Missouri in 2000 and a master’s degree in business administration from PSU. Hafer and his wife, Ann, have three children: Thomas (6), Ella Rose (4) and Joseph Whitfield (2).
