All-star workouts
slated on June 6
Practice sessions have been set for the basketball teams involved in the Lions District 26-E All-Star Twin Classic scheduled on June 7 at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.
Seligman Lions Joyce Hughes, assistant to game chairman Bill Baxley, said the North and South girls teams will work out starting at 6 p.m. on June 6. The boys session will follow.
Pizza and soft drinks will be available after practice, Hughes said, and uniform tops will be given out.
Hughes said the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center will be open at 5 p.m. for players wanting to take extra shooting practice.

Wilson captures
honors at OCC
Amber Wilson, Springfield, won most valuable player honors in both soccer and basketball to highlight athletic award presentations this week at Ozark Christian College.
The most valuable player award in baseball, which OCC reinstituted this year after a long absence, went to Andrew Harmon from Brownsburg, Ind.
Other MVP honors went to Josh Moore, Joplin, in soccer; Travis Roberts, Junction City, Kan., in basketball; and Karen Byrns, Libby, Mont., volleyball.

on region team
MIAMI, Okla. — Sophomores Faith Richmond, Shae Peterson and Tia Reich of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M have been voted to the all-Region II softball team.
Richmond, from Greenwood, Ark., led the Lady Norse with a 14-5 record and a 2.05 earned run average in 109.1 innings. She recorded 99 strikeouts.
Peterson, a shortstop from Broken Arrow, led NEO with a .474 batting average, 37 RBI and eight home runs. Reich, an outfielder and also from Broken Arrow, batted .361 with seven doubles and two home runs.
NEO freshman Cara Dearmore, a catcher from Coweta, and Kyrie Panter, a third baseman from Miami, were named to the second team. Dearmore hit .363 with five home runs and Panter hit .277 with a team-high 13 stolen bases.
Miller favored
in district baseball
EXETER, Mo. — Miller, which has a bye for the opening round, and Hurley are the top two seeded prep baseball teams for the Class 1 District 6 Tournament scheduled next week.
Monday’s 4:30 p.m. games are Exeter at fourth-seeded Billings, Greenfield at Hurley and Wheaton at No. 3 Lockwood.
Semifinals games on Tuesday will be held at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30. The championship game is set for 5 p.m. on Thursday.
I-44 Speedway
calls off races
LEBANON, Mo. — The late model Race Brothers Show-Me Racin’ Series on Saturday night at I-44 Speedway has been postponed.
Said I-44 promoter Randy Mooneyham: “We thought three specials in a row — the World of Outlaws Late Model Series last week and the WOW Winged Sprint Car Series on May 17 — might be too much for our fans.”
A makeup date is expected soon. The next Show-Me Racin’ Series special is scheduled May 30 at Lebanon Midway Speedway.
Eagles rated fourth
in district tourney
Joplin is seeded fourth in next week’s Class 4 district baseball tournament at Kickapoo High School in Springfield.
The Eagles (10-16) face Neosho (8-14) in the tournament opener at 4:30 p.m. Monday. The second game at 7 matches third-seeded Nixa against Central.
Semifinal games on Tuesday pit top-seeded Kickapoo against the Joplin-Neosho winner at 4:30 and second-seeded Parkview vs. the Nixa-Central winner at 7. The championship game is at 5:30 Thursday.
Galena, Rams
district favorites
Galena received the top seed in the Class 3A regional baseball tournament hosted by Riverton.
The Bulldogs (16-3) and second-seeded Riverton (16-4) received byes and advance to Tuesday’s semifinal round, starting at 2 p.m. The final game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
First-round games on Monday pair Erie at third-seeded Baxter Springs at 5:30 and Southeast at fourth-seeded Frontenac at 4:30.
St. Mary’s-Colgan (18-1), the four-time defending Class 2-1A state champion, is the host and top seed for its district. Second-seeded St. Paul and No. 3 Uniontown are both 5-5.
Riverton softball
team seeded first
Riverton is the No. 1 seed in next week’s Class 3A regional softball tournament hosted by Frontenac.
First-round games on Monday have Erie at fourth-seeded Baxter Springs at 5:30 p.m. and Galena at No. 3 Southeast at 4:30.
Riverton (13-4) and No. 2 Frontenac (13-7) play semifinal games Tuesday at 3 and 4:45 p.m., respectively. The championship game follows at 6:30.
Unbeatens Girard (18-0) and Columbus (16-0) are the top two seeds in the 4A regional. First-round games at 4:30 p.m. Monday include Chanute at Columbus and Parsons at Girard.
The semifinals and title game will be played Wednesday in Girard, starting at 3 p.m.
St. Mary’s-Colgan (16-4) is seeded first in the 2-1A tournament at Northeast High School in Arma. The semifinals and final are on Tuesday, starting at 3 p.m.
