I haven’t played very much.” Although he hasn’t played very much, Fink, a member of the Eagle Creek team, fired a 4-under-par 67 at Schifferdecker Municipal Golf Course to grab the first-round lead. Fink owned a one-shot lead over Steve McKenzie of Briarbrook as one-fourth of the 48-man field shot par or better. Briarbrook players posted five of the day’s best scores and built a 13-stroke lead in the team competition. Briarbrook, the defending team champion, shot a six-man total of 7-under-par 419 to set the pace, followed by Eagle Creek 432, Twin Hills 433 and Joplin Golf Club 440. Fink made six birdies and two bogeys during his round of 34-33. The long-hitting Fink birdied only one of the three par-5s, and both bogeys came on par-3s — No. 9 and 12. “Putting was the key,” Fink said. “Anything inside 10 feet was going in. All my birdies were inside six feet except for a 10-footer on No. 6. “I was keeping the ball in play off the tee. This is definitely a bomber’s course. You can hit it as far as you want and still be in pretty good shape. And Fink is one of those bombers. “I’ve been told I hit the ball a long way,” he said. McKenzie, playing in the first group, shot 35-33 and capped his round with an eagle after lacing a 3-iron from the right rough within one foot of the flag. “It was a little draw ... the best iron I hit all day,” McKenzie said. “It always helps to finish 2-under on the last hole.” McKenzie’s longest birdie came on the par-4 13th.
