Briefs: Clark, Lawver given MIAA honors
Pittsburg State senior and Webb City product Bryson Clark was named the MIAA pitcher of the year Monday.
Clark finished the season 7-2, losing 1-0 twice. He led the conference with a 1.94 ERA, two shutouts and six complete games and was a unanimous all-MIAA first-team selection.
Missouri Southern senior Luke Lawver, a Joplin High graduate, was named to the first team as a utility player. Lawver hit .376, sixth in the MIAA, and led the league with 20 doubles. He also had six home runs, 28 RBI and was 5-7 with two saves in pitching duties.
Pitt State outfielder Jeff Deao also was named to the first team. He led the conference with 39 stolen bases.
His brother, Kevin Deao, was named to the second team for PSU along with another Webb City product, Drew Schulte. Schulte, who hit .333 with four home runs and 31 RBI, is a four-time all-MIAA selection.
Honorable mention choices include PSU’s Brett Hothan, Luke Naccarato and T.J. Franklin.
Central Missouri first baseman Josh Paul was unanimous MIAA player of the year. Washburn’s Joy is the freshman of the year, and UCM’s Darin Hendrickson is coach of the year.
Joplin Hall of Fame class unveiled
The Joplin Sports Authority announced its 2007 Hall of Fame class Monday.
Comprising the class:
—Bob Turner, a member of state-championship baseball and basketball teams at Joplin High in 1955 and a two-sport star at Baylor University.
—Rusty Shelley, a former Joplin Parkwood quarterback, NAIA honorable mention All-American at Missouri Southern in 1976, Webb City and Joplin Memorial coach and Joplin athletic director.
—Suzanne Sharp, a tennis player who won more than 40 singles, doubles and mixed doubles tournament titles. She died in 1986.
—Mark Taylor, who won state titles in football, basketball and track at Memorial in the 1970s and played football at Southern.
—Greg Carlton, a Parkwood football and baseball standout. He later led the Big 8 with a .397 batting average at the University of Oklahoma.
