sports@joplinglobe.com Five area golfers registered top-20 finishes, and Carl Junction placed sixth in the Class 3 team standings as the four MSHSAA boys state golf tournaments concluded Tuesday in the Springfield area. Class 3 Carl Junction’s 329 team score at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield was a three-shot improvement over Monday’s first round, but the Bulldogs slipped one spot in the team standings, finishing with a 661 total. St. Charles Duchesne, four shots behind the Bulldogs after one round, improved 12 strokes on Tuesday to finish with 660. Tyler Gast, a junior from Nevada, shot a final-round 5-over-par 77 for a 36-hole total of 156, good for a share of 10th place in the 128-man field. Seniors Adam Mertens of Carl Junction and Trevor Freeman of Carthage and junior Taylor Vanzandt of Cassville tied for 19th at 158. Mertens posted a pair of 79s, Freeman shot 75-83 and Vanzandt had 82-76. Andrew Maier, a junior from Webb City, tied for 31st place with 80-82—162. Kearney won the team title with a 628, and sophomore Kevin Bell from Westminster Christian Academy was medalist with 74-75—149. Class 2 Dakota Brown, senior from Mount Vernon, shot 75-77—152 to tie for seventh place at Deer Lake Golf Course. Jace Long, a senior from Dixon, matched par-144 (71-73) to claim medalist honors. Ash Grove breezed to the team title with 636, beating runner-up Cameron by 24 shots. Class 1 Chris Yuhas, a senior at College Heights Christian School, carded another 88 for a 176 total at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar.
