CARTHAGE, Mo. — Carl Junction tied it in the seventh and won it in the eighth in turning back Seneca 3-2 in a semifinal worthy of a championship game on Tuesday night in the Class 3 District 12 Tournament.
Webb City, with pitcher Chance Sossamon allowing one hit and rapping a solo home run, trimmed Carthage 10-0 in five innings in the first game at Carl Lewton Stadium in Carthage Municipal Park.
Top-seeded Webb City (20-5) and second-seeded Carl Junction (19-5) will clash at 1 p.m. on Thursday for the title.
Third-seeded Seneca and No. 4 Carthage finished 14-7 and 9-15, respectively.
Probable starting pitchers for Thursday’s showdown are senior right-hander Brett Richardson (7-0) for Webb City and senior left-hander Zak Porath (7-2) for Carl Junction.
Carl Junction, 0-2 vs. Webb City this season, beat the Cardinals in the district final in 2007.
Carl Junction’s Nate Thomas, a senior, bested Seneca’s Alex Scott, a junior, in a duel of right-handers in the second contest that was delayed by about 25 minutes in the fifth because of the threat of inclement weather. Players and fans sought shelter for a few minutes in the dressing rooms.
Carl Junction got a break in scoring the tying run. Porath walked with one out in the seventh, swiped second, moved to third on John Michel’s infield grounder and scored as the third baseman, playing deep, was unable to throw out Evan Clemons.
Drew Caruthers singled to open the Carl Junction eighth and scored on Jake Hale’s sacrifice and Matt Thompson’s two-out single.
“It was a great game,” Carl Junction coach Flave Darnell said. “Give credit to Coach (Chris) Yust’s team. ... especially their pitcher (Scott). Scott came right at us.
“Our kids did seem to improve as the game went along,” Darnell said.
Thomas, who didn’t allow a hit after the second inning, finished with a three-hitter, struck out seven and walked two.
The Indians scored their runs in the first with the help of Patrick Bennett’s run-scoring single and Cody Badgwell’s sacrifice fly.
