A class of five will be inducted into the Joplin Sports Authority Hall of Fame this weekend.
The class consists of former coaches Mickey Heatherly and Tom Hilton, golfer Virginia (Gingy) Laas, basketball player Jimmy Dailey and sports editor/columnist Porter Wittich.
The banquet and induction ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in the Joplin Museum Complex, located in Schifferdecker Park. Banquet tickets are $15 and can be reserved by calling the Joplin Sports Authority, (417) 625-1006.
An 18-hole, four-person scramble golf tournament is set for 8 a.m. Saturday at the Schifferdecker Municipal Golf Course. Entry fee is $45.
Heatherly, after serving as defensive coordinator for head coach Dewey Combs at Parkwood High School, was head coach at Memorial High School in 1983 and 1984. When Parkwood and Memorial consolidated, he rejoined Combs’ staff in 1985 before becoming the Eagles’ head coach in 1986 through 1995.
Heatherly began his coaching career as an assistant at Carthage in 1959. He began the football program at McDonald County High School in 1962 and coached at Baxter Springs and Riverton before joining the Parkwood staff in 1972. Since retiring from coaching, Heatherly has officiated football, basketball, baseball and softball games and serves as the assignor for the Joplin Basketball Officials Association.
Hilton pitched at Parkwood and Missouri Southern before becoming a graduate assistant coach at Arkansas. He later served as pitching coach for the Razorbacks before becoming head coach at Labette Community College where his teams compiled a 627-221 record.
Hilton also served as a pitching coach at the Olympic Festival in Los Angeles in 1991 and was an assistant coach on the USA Junior National team in 1992.
Laas was one of the top female golfers in Joplin and teamed with Karen MacGee of Kansas City to win the best-ball Jenny Classic at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club four times in a five-year span. Laas also won the Women’s Tri-State two times, reached the quarterfinals of the 1973 Missouri Women’s Amateur and played on several Joplin teams in the Horton Smith cup matches against Springfield.
Laas, a member of the Missouri Southern faculty, won’t attend the banquet. She has been teaching this semester in London and is vacationing in Europe.
Dailey was the point guard on Joplin High School’s state championship basketball team in 1955. His coach, Russ Kaminsky, called Dailey “the most confident player I ever coached.”
Dailey received a full scholarship to Saint Louis University and started three years (freshmen weren’t eligible to play at that time). He was the Billikens’ captain his junior and senior years and was named Sportsman of the Year in 1959-60.
Wittich started his career with The Globe in 1927 after attending Notre Dame. His father, Lucius, was a mining editor and sports writer for The Globe.
