SARCOXIE, Mo. — Purdy seized control with a four-run second inning and rolled past McAuley Catholic 10-2 Thursday night in the championship game of the Class 2 District 10 baseball tournament at Sarcoxie High School.

Daniel Barrientos drove in three runs, and Derek Fulp collected two hits and two runs batted in as the Eagles (17-7) earned their second straight district championship.

Purdy opens state tournament play Monday at home against Blue Eye (15-3).

“It was a very good team win,” head coach Josh Hughes said. “When you get an early lead, it makes it easier. Just like (Wednesday) against Lamar, you get an early lead and you don’t press so much. When you press at 17, 18 years old, you may make mistakes. And we didn’t make very many mistakes tonight.”

The Warriors (5-14) saw the clock strike midnight on their Cinderella run in the district tournament. Seeded eighth with just three victories during the regular season, the Warriors knocked off top-seeded Pierce City 3-2 and fifth-seeded Sarcoxie 15-4 to reach the final.

“It was an exciting week,” Warriors head coach Chris Taylor said. “We’ve come a long way. Early in the season we were not a very good team. I would say it’s (more important) where you end the season rather than where you started. We finished about as good as we could. We couldn’t play much better. We ran into a better team tonight.”

Mason Roller’s run-scoring single gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the first against Warriors starter Rocky Spry.

Josh Wiseman walked and Chris Bennett was hit by a pitch to start the Purdy second, and both scored on Fulp’s double to right-center field. Landon Terry reached on an error, and a balk and Barrientos’ squeeze bunt brought in the last two runs of the inning for a 5-0 advantage.

The lead was more than enough for Purdy starter Derek Daily, who allowed five hits and an unearned run, walked two and struck out six in five innings. Reliever Wiseman gave up two hits and fanned three in the last two innings.

“It’s tough to come back,” Taylor said. “Their guy is throwing strikes, and they have a good catcher. It’s tough to do a lot of stuff against them when you get down. You have to rely on hits, and we just didn’t get them. It’s a lot easier to do things when you have the lead.”

The Eagles added a run in the third on an obstruction call and plated four more in the fourth on a wild pitch, Barrientos’ two-run single to center and Ryan Veith’s RBI double to right.

After Veith’s hit, Warrior reliever Austin Metts retired eight of the last nine batters he faced, six on strikeouts.

Logan Moore had two of the Warriors’ seven hits.
