No. 1 Santa Fe ousts Norse

PLANT CITY, Fla. — No. 1-ranked Santa Fe, Fla., struck in the bottom of the 12th inning and eliminated Northeastern Oklahoma A&M from the NJCAA Softball World Series on Thursday.
Mallory Borden’s two-run homer gave the Saints a 4-2 victory in a consolation game of the 16-team tournament.
Midland (Texas) State dropped NEO into the losers’ bracket with a 2-0 decision to begin the day’s action.
NEO, the Region II champion, finished the season with a 36-13 record.
The Lady Norse held a pair of leads against Santa Fe, but couldn’t put the Chiefs away. Santa Fe tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by leadoff hitter Brittany Cannon.
NEO had two scoring opportunities in extra innings. Third baseman Kyrie Panter led off the ninth with a single, but was thrown out stealing. Ali Seibel singled to start the 11th, but a double play erased that threat.
In the bottom of the 12th, Jean-Francois Belourse reached on an error ahead of Borden’s game-ending homer.
NEO took a 1-0 lead in the third. Leslie Hobbs singled, moved up on a bunt by Alyssa Poole and scored on Tia Reich’s single. After Santa Fe tied the game with a run in the fourth, the Norse went back ahead in the top of the sixth when center fielder Erin Eddy belted a solo homer.
Winning pitcher Katelyn Murphee scattered six hits, didn’t issue a walk and struck out six NEO hitters.
In the opener against Midland, the Lady Norse had seven hits and stranded nine baserunners. Left fielder Reich and right fielder Hobbs had two hits each.
The best scoring opportunity came in the second inning, when Ali Seibel and KaeLani Bryan led off with back-to-back singles. Hobbs bunted the runners over, but an infield popup and a strikeout ended the inning. NEO had two more runners in scoring position in the third before a fly ball ended the threat.
Winning pitcher Alex Riedeman didn’t issue a walk and struck out five. Brittany Plaisted took the loss, allowing a pair of unearned runs.
An error, a groundout and Taylor Howard’s RBI single put Midland ahead 1-0 in the first inning. The Chaparrals added a run in the fourth on a single, a passed ball, a bunt and an RBI hit by Logan Zamora.
