While the individual battles are close, Briarbrook Golf and Country Club holds big leads entering the final two rounds of the men’s and women’s city golf tournaments.
Today’s third round for both tournaments will be played at Eagle Creek Golf Course (formerly Loma Linda Country Club). Tee times for the Joplin Globe Men’s City Championship begin at 10:30 a.m., and the women’s play will start at 12:16 p.m.
Briarbrook’s men took control with a 7-under-par 419 in the first round last Saturday at Schifferdecker Municipal Golf Course. After the second round on its home course, Briarbrook owned an 871 total, followed by Twin Hills 894, Joplin Golf Club 902 and Eagle Creek 904.
Kyle Long of Twin Hills posted a 70 on both courses to lead the 48-man men’s field with a 3-under-par 140. Lee Larimore of Briarbrook ranks second at 142, and Anthony Fink of Eagle Creek and Tim Old of Briarbrook share third place at 144. That foursome tees off at 12:09 p.m. today.
Todd Pefferman of Twin Hills is fifth with 146, followed by Briarbrook’s Tommy Clifford at 147 and Joplin Golf Club’s Tyler Smith and Briarbrook’s Steve McKenzie at 148.
A four-way tie for ninth involves Eagle Creek’s Mike Maier, Joplin Golf Club’s Paul Ashe and Briarbrook’s Frank Jacobs and Les Taylor.
The Joplin Women’s City Championship was whittled to 27 holes last weekend. Only half of the field completed their opening round before the storms hit.
Briarbrook tops the team standings with 531, followed by Schifferdecker 546, Twin Hills 570 and Eagle Creek 606.
Just three strokes separate the top four players.
Linda Ballard of Twin Hills holds the lead at 129, followed by teammate Missy Little and Schifferdecker’s Jo Poyzer with 130 and Briarbrook’s Deb McFarland at 132. They comprise the first group today at 12:16.
Esther Alumbaugh of Schifferdecker also shot 130 last weekend, but she’s not listed in today’s pairings.
Jennifer Fagan is fifth with 136, followed by Tammy Thomas and Beth Parmley with 137, Leigh Ann Hackney and Phyllis Sanders with 140 and Sue Browning with 142. All are from Briarbrook except Parmley, an Eagle Creek player.
Sunday’s final round will be played at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club, with men’s tee times starting at 8 a.m.
