ratkinson@joplinglobe.com BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — The teams that had to do the most driving on Friday —especially Jayhawk-Linn — packed the most punch at the Kansas Class 3A regional track and field meet at Baxter Springs High School. But that didn’t stop a large contingent of local runners, jumpers and throwers from qualifying for next week’s state meet at Wichita State University. Jayhawk Linn, from Mound City, Kan., swept the boys and girls team titles. The Jayhawk girls ran away with the regional title with their 132-85 advantage over second-place Wellsville. Caney Valley was third with 56, followed by Neodesha (49), Central Heights (47), Cherryvale (36) and Southeast (35). Jayhawk-Linn’s boys nipped second-place Osage City 83-70 while Caney Valley finished third with 69 points. Riverton, led by a strong individual effort from Brenton Cates, was fourth with 56 points. Cates, a junior, won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.31 seconds and took the 400 at 51.0. He was second in the 100 and also qualified for state when Riverton’s 4x400 relay team took fourth. “I knew I had a pretty good chance (to qualify) in the 400, but I knew the 100 and the 200 would be tough,” Cates said. Cates’ win in the 200 came by less than half a second over Southeast’s Daniel Rank and his loss in the 100 came by just one tenth of a second to Osage City’s Tyler Bartee. “When I came around the turn in the 200, I was in third,” Cates said. “I just tried to kick it in and give it all I had. Luckily, I pulled it out.” Also qualifying for the Riverton boys was Brad Hefley in the shot put, Logan North in the high jump and Tommy Vigil in the pole vault. Galena’s Chase Keyser won the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 4 inches and finished third in the triple jump at 20-3. Ethan New was fourth for the Bulldogs in the discus while the 4x100 relay team took first with a time of 44.84. Baxter Springs had athletes qualify in six events, led by Mike Ruple’s win the discus and third-place finish in the shot put. Joe Kellum finished second in the pole vault while Jake Spence was third in the 1600 and Ethan Harper was fourth in the 200. The Baxter Springs 4x100 relay team finished fourth. The Riverton girls got a strong showing from Rachel Wilson, who finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 35-4 1/2 and took second in the long jump.
