Webb City gears up for Branson
Cards, Pirates collide today in state sectionals

Upstart Branson — the young Pirates were seeded only sixth in the District 11 Tournament — visits Webb City today in the sectional round of the MSHSAA Class 3 baseball playoffs.
Branson, in winning a district championship for the first time since 2003, has won 6-of-8 games in reaching 13-11 overall entering the 5:30 p.m. game at Barnes Field.
But the first-round appearance isn’t unusual for venerable Pirate coach Steve Lael. He’s amassed more than 350 wins at Branson, a member of the Central Ozark Conference, and is seeking a fifth trip to the semifinals.
“We’ve had solid pitching throughout the season,” Lael said on Monday. “Lately, we’ve been hitting the ball better and coming up with clutch hits. We’ve had the ability to come back, too.”
The ingredients naturally have Webb City coach Shawn Mayes concerned.
“We’ve picked up a few things (in compiling a scouting report on the Bucs),” Mayes said. “Obviously, they’re a proven program. They’re a young team that is playing well and playing with confidence. We understand the catcher (senior Jordan Storm) is a very good hitter.”
Today’s pitching pairing is senior right-hander Chance Sossamon for Webb City vs. sophomore right-hander Tim Townsend.
Townsend, 8-3 with a 2.72 ERA, has struck out 70 and walked 16 in 61 innings. Sossamon, 4-1 with three saves and a 1.83 ERA, has struck out 44 and walked 18 in 30 2/3 innings.
Leading hitters for Branson, according to Lael, include Storm (.338), junior first baseman Levi Casey (.385, 30 RBI), junior center fielder Will Leidecker (.316) and junior left fielder Sean Capps (three home runs).
Leidecker had three hits and sophomore shortstop Taylor Helsel a pair as the Pirates beat No. 1 seed Republic 6=4 in the District 11 final at Willard. The Pirates, who had 11 hits, scored two runs in the top of the eighth to snap a 4-4 deadlock.
Mayes, who’s in his first season as head coach after a pair helping Bryce Darnell, is assisted by Cole Shewmake, Brett Power and Jackson Boyer.
Mayes said pitching and hitting have sparked the Southwest Conference champion Cardinals.
Sossamon also has been an offensive key. He’s averaging .453 with seven homers, 38 RBI, 35 runs scored and 28 stolen bases.
