WEBB CITY, Mo. — Webb City, mustering a meager three hits, beat gritty Branson 4-2 on Tuesday night in the sectional round of the MSHSAA Class 3 baseball playoffs at Barnes Field.

The Cardinals, 22-5, relied on Chance Sossamon’s four-hit pitching and solid defense to set up a 6 p.m. quarterfinal meeting with Rogersville on Thursday at Barnes.

Rogersville, like Branson a member of the Central Ozark Conference (which Webb City has joined for next season), defeated visiting Clinton 3-0 on Tuesday.

Patrick Drake had two of the Cardinals’ hits and had a hand in their pair of two-run innings.

Branson, which finished 13-12, didn’t go down meekly in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Alex Westcott, leading off, singled off Sossamon’s glove. Sossamon retired the next two batters before walking Will Leidecker on a 3-2 pitch. The right-handed Sossamon then retired Taylor Helsel on a soft liner to second baseman Braxton Perry.

“For a moment, I thought the ball was going to get over his head,” Branson coach Steve Lael said of the final out.

Webb City built a 4-0 lead against curve-balling right-hander Tim Townsend.

The Cardinals pushed across two runs in the first. The first tally came on a walk to Darren Aggus, a single by Drake sending Aggus to third and Sossamon’s run-scoring infield roller. Townsend bore down for the second out before walking Austin Lepper, allowing Cameron Beaver’s infield single and plunking Jordan Hickman.

Branson “assisted” the Cardinals defensively in the fifth. Drake singled with one out and continued to third on an infield miscue. Sossamon reached on an error in picking up his second RBI. Mack Kyle walked while Sossamon was stealing second and third. He eventually tallied as Beaver reached on catcher’s interference

The Pirates retaliated with two runs in the sixth. Leidecker was hit by a pitch, Levi Casey walked and the runners advanced on Jordan Storm’s infield out to set up Sean Capps’ two-run single.

“Chance (Sossamon) did a good job on the mound,” Cardinal coach Shawn Mayes said. “Defensively, we played well. Offensively, we didn’t do a good job of adjusting at the plate.

“Branson was a feisty group,” Mayes said. “I thought it would take more than two runs.”
