EMPORIA, Kan. — Three pitchers combined on a two-hitter, and seven players drove in at least one run as St. Mary’s-Colgan rolled past Spearville 12-0 in five innings Friday morning in the KSHSAA Class 2-1A baseball tournament at Soden’s Grove.

The top-seeded Panthers (22-1), seeking their fifth consecutive state championship and 14th overall, play Sedan (20-4) in a semifinal game today at 10 a.m. Sedan, the fifth seed, nipped Plainville 5-4 in eight innings.

Senior right-hander Evan VanBecelaere struck out five batters and allowed only one hit in the first three innings. He threw just 29 pitches, meaning he is available for today’s two games.

Jake Edwards and Adam McCormick worked one inning apiece, with Edwards giving up a hit in the fourth.

Willie Watt ignited the Panther offense with a two-run home run over the left-field fence in the first inning. Colgan widened its lead with four runs in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth.

Stuart Jeck singled home two runs in the second, and Joe Wachter’s triple to left-center and Kenny Wachter’s sacrifice fly that was misplayed in left each plated a run.

Kapaun 6, Pittsburg 1

WICHITA, Kan. — Led by Dominik King’s pitching and hitting, Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel knocked off second-seeded Pittsburg in the Class 5A tournament at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

King allowed seven hits in a complete-game effort, and he collected three hits and three runs batted in. His run-scoring double gave Kapaun a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, and he doubled home two runs to highlight a three-run sixth.

The Purple Dragons (17-2) scored their run in the third when Ryan Williams led off with a single and scored on Austin Ross’ two-out single. Ross and Shane Drenick had two hits apiece for the Dragons.

Pittsburg starter Brandon Spear (7-1) gave up four runs (three earned) in five-plus innings, and Drenick was charged with the last two runs in the sixth.
