MANHATTAN, Kan. — Baxter Springs third baseman Jenyce Spence found herself in the wrong place at what was most certainly the worst time.

An infield single from light-hitting Sandy Eaton fell behind the drawn-in Spence and proved to be the difference in Wichita Independent’s 5-2 Class 3A state-quarterfinal victory against Baxter Springs on Friday night at the Twin Oaks Sports Complex.

The loss ends the Lions’ season at 15-5.

“Just the way it goes sometimes,” Baxter Springs coach Cory Perry said. “… We’ve got nothing to be ashamed of.”

With the game tied at 2 and Independent runners on second and third and two out in the bottom of the sixth, Eaton, slapped a pop-up to third base, where Spence normally would play.

Spence, though, was expecting a bunt from Eaton, who had looked overmatched in two previous at-bats against Baxter Springs pitcher Sam Cassell. The ball fell into the vacated space as the go-ahead run trotted home.

“Right in the hole where we weren’t,” Perry said. “And she hadn’t hit the dang ball all game.”

The Lions, however, compounded the bad luck with a mistake. Shortstop Amber Qualls ran to the ball and tried to cut down Eaton at second base. The ball skipped into right field, allowing two more runs to come home.

“We made uncharacteristic errors today,” Perry said. “Errors we hadn’t made since the first couple games of the year. Is that nervousness? Maybe. But we had our chances to win.”

Baxter Springs, though it had erased two deficits already, couldn’t come back in the seventh.

Down 1-0 in the fourth, the Lions evened things on Kendra Hilderbrand’s one-out RBI single. She was out trying to go to second on the throw home, and that proved costly when the next batter, Taylor Bingham, doubled.

After the Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the fifth — a diving Jessica Black couldn’t come up with Rachel Damiris’ sinking liner to center that brought home a run — the Lions rallied again.

Cassell singled and stole second to lead off the top of the sixth and came home on another two-out double from Bingham, this one just fair inside the third-base line.
