It’s no shock, therefore, to find Gubera very pleased that he’s been given the football reins of the Warriors. “Right now it’s a great place for me to be,” Gubera said Monday. “I’m comfortable after being there a couple of years. It’s no shock, therefore, to find Gubera very pleased that he’s been given the football reins of the Warriors. “Right now it’s a great place for me to be,” Gubera said Monday. “I’m comfortable after being there a couple of years. Obviously, they wanted me if they chose me from all of the applicants.” Jonathan Wengert, who started the McAuley program in 2003, resigned after four years as the Warriors’ head coach to take a position at Neosho High School. “I’m excited,” Gubera said. “It’s my first head coaching job at the high school level. “Definitely, I have big shoes to fill. Coach Wengert did a great job. “It’s a successful program. My goal is to take it to the next level and build on what Coach Wengert has started.” The Class 1 Warriors, Gubera noted, were 8-3 last season and 9-2 in 2006 in reaching the first round of the playoffs. Gubera, the past two years, worked with quarterbacks, running backs and linebackers. “I’ll call the offense and stay with the quarterbacks and running backs,” Gubera said. “Tim, my (younger) brother, will take over the linebackers.” Tim Gubera also will help with the junior-high program. John Wilkerson, who’ll serve as the defensive coordinator, and Matt Crane (defensive line) are other assistants. “We’re looking for possibly one or two more assistants,” Brenden Gubera said. “For sure, we want one more assistant.” Gubera prepped at Joplin (1995) and was a guard-defensive end for Mickey Heatherly. Gubera, a Missouri Southern graduate, began coaching at Joplin South with a two-year stint. He was on the freshman staff for Jesse Wall for three years before moving to McAuley.
