The difference in geese ... the difference in the world Norten’s paddle he used that day in the fall of 1933, is a small battered and bedraggled sassafras paddle my grandfather made, which hangs in my office today. He will use a sassafras paddle this week which he made himself last winter.
And he feels really bad that he has to ask anywhere from $150 to $200 of two fishermen for a full day’s trip down the river catching smallmouth that they will release, without taking home a single fish to eat. That’s nearly double what he charged 10 or 15 years ago when he was young! If he hadn’t gone away to fight in World War II, he would have been able to boast of guiding fishermen for 75 consecutive years. Who do you know that has pursued one type of occupation for 75 years?
