rbrown@joplinglobe.com The Joplin Miners will be among eight baseball teams to kick off pool play today in the fifth annual Roper/Joplin Sports Authority Classic. In the A Pool, the Miners will take on Bolivar at 7 p.m. following the 4:30 p.m. B-Pool contest matching Carthage against Bentonville, Ark., at Joplin High School. The other two outings — in the D Pool at Joe Becker Stadium — will feature McDonald County vs. Wagoner, Okla., at 4:30 p.m. and Baxter Springs, Kan., vs. Wagoner at 7. Other squads in the 12-team tournament, which winds up Sunday, include Okmulgee, Okla., in the A Pool, Raytown in the B Pool and Neosho, Olathe, Kan., and Springdale, Ark., in the C Pool. “To play for the championship, you have to win your pool,” Joplin coach Tucker Hagedorn said. “We are going to have to swing our bats to win it, but we have been doing that pretty well recently.” The Miners will take on the only other team in Pool A, Okmulgee, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Joe Becker, where Neosho will open play against Olathe at noon. The remaining Friday schedule at Becker will have Neosho vs. Springdale at 2:30 p.m. and Springdale vs. Olathe at 5. The Friday slate at the JHS field will see McDonald County vs. Baxter Springs at noon, Bolivar vs. Okmulgee at 2:30, Raytown vs. Bentonville at 5 and Carthage vs. Raytown at 7:30. Four games will be held at each field on Saturday at the same times as Friday. The championship contest will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday following the 11 a.m. fifth-place game at Becker. The seventh-place will begin at 11 a.m. and third-place contest at 2 p.m. at JHS. “It’s a pretty wide open field,” said Hagedorn, who didn’t name tournament favorites. “We have seen in person that Baxter Springs is a pretty talented offensive club. They swept us in a doubleheader last Wednesday. The bunch from Wagoner will be good and the group out of Olathe is pretty decent.” Hagedorn said Okmulgee, Wagoner and Baxter Springs have good pitching. “Baxter Springs has the (Justin) Kemp kid who throws the ball hard,” he said. “He has a good arm and his ball has some movement, too.” Calvin Burr will start on the mound for Joplin against Bolivar and Kyle Veazey on Friday against Okmulgee. Last year’s champion, an American Legion team from Columbia, no longer exists, said Hagedorn.
