sports@joplinglobe.com With the rain finally subsiding long enough to break out the golf clubs, the NGA Amateur Pro-Am Golf Scramble kicked off with a bang Wednesday at the Loma Linda Country Club. Three flights consisting of 26 teams squared off for the tournament’s top prize of $800. Each four-person team was paired with an NGA professional who will participate in today’s opening round of the NGA Hooters Tour Loma Linda Classic. More importantly, the day provided the first real warm-up opportunity for the pros as they hit the links and received first-hand knowledge of the nooks and crannies of the course. Derek Lamely (Fort Myers, Fla.) will receive the double whammy after his qualifying round on Monday placed him in his first-ever Hooters event. “I don’t know what to expect out here,” Lamely said. “I’ve never played a Hooters tour before and this is my first time on this course. “I have no idea what’s going to happen.” Lamely, fresh off a lasik procedure to clear up his eyesight, will be playing his first event since the surgery. Despite dubbing his play as “rusty” Lamely knows he’ll have to play his best to hang with the rest of the talented field. And Lamely knows about playing with great talent. He was a member of the 2004 Western Open. “There’s good players (in the tournament) and they are going to play good no matter what ... no matter where you go,” Lamely said. “So (I have) just got to play good.” There are two local golfers in this year’s field. Joplin’s Lee Larimore and Tommy Clifford are in the mix. However, there are those who trekked much further than the Four-State Area to tee it up. Jose Buezas made the trip from Bahia Blanca, Argentina. Buezas, who’s playing in his fourth year on the Hooters Tour, says he prefers playing in the Four-State Area more than anywhere else in the U.S. “I’ve been coming and going from Argentina,” Buezas said. “I probably have more friends here in the Arkansas and Oklahoma area than I do in Jacksonville — my home base here in the states.
