sports@joplinglobe.com The Joplin Miners were in need of a big hit Thursday while trailing Bolivar by a run with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Just as the Miners began to sweat, Devon Meyer stepped into the batter’s box and delivered a key two-run home run to left field to spark a four-run seventh. The end result was a 7-4 Miners’ victory in the opening round of pool play action of the Roper Classic at Joplin High School. The two teams traded blows throughout the game as quality pitching and timely hitting kept the score close. Both offenses scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings, and Joplin trailed 4-3 after Bolivar’s Cody Gibson singled and scored on Phillip Davolt’s single to left field. Miners starter Calvin Burr was stuck with a no-decision after tossing five innings and allowing six hits and three runs and a pair of strikeouts. Burr struggled early, and while his arsenal wasn’t particularly dazzling in the early going, he pitched well enough to keep the Miners in the game. “We got a big effort out of Calvin Burr,” Miners coach Tucker Hagedorn said. “He did the No. 1 job of a starting pitcher (tonight). He struggled a little bit early, but he kept his team in the game and that was what he needed to do.” Dane Kolkmeyer (1-0) relieved Burr in the sixth and picked up the win after allowing a run on three hits in two innings of work. Meyer’s only hit was the home run — though he also collected four RBI. Barrett Noirfalise followed Meyer with a double down the line in left and Mitchell Burr drove him in with a single to right. Logan Nelson singled two batters later to drive in Burr. “We were trailing so we were in catch-up mode and were supposed to take a strike,” Meyer said of his plate appearance in the seventh. “I looked down at coach because he usually wipes it off and I got up 2-0 and he did. “He threw me a fastball down the middle and I hit it.” Marco Maturino finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Maturino led off the game with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Meyer. His eye at the plate also was a contributing factor for the Miners as the center fielder drew a lead-off walk in the top of the seventh.
