awelch@joplinglobe.com Alba’s Roy Maynard left the impression on Friday that he’s very happy with his return to auto racing. “It’s a hobby. I don’t do it for a living,” Maynard said. “I especially enjoy the people. It’s been a good experience. It’s good for my son, Dakota, too.” Maynard made it a winning experience last Saturday night at Springfield Raceway. Maynard won the 20-lap sport mod A feature — the first of his career — at the quarter-mile track. Maynard, 37, a 1989 graduate of Sarcoxie High School, enters tonight’s program second in season points. Leaders in the sport mod class include Joplin’s Billy Street (142), Maynard (101), Reeds Spring’s Mike Hailmann (96), Springfield’s J.C. Morton (92). Springfield’s Mike Watson (87) and Clever’s Darrin Crisler (87). Maynard, the seventh different winner in as many races in the sport mod class at Springfield this season, beat Joplin’s Darian Hendrix. “It was very close,” Maynard said. “I believe I started inside on the fifth row. I managed to pull away the last two laps. We were side-by-side for 10 or 11 laps. “I believe I’d finished third in a main event for my previous best,” Maynard said. “Well, I came back the next night (at the Monett Speedway) to place third in the B modified class behind Randy Lebow (Galena, Mo.) and Street.” Maynard began racing competitively in a modified during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. “A friend, (Oronogo’s) Jeff Pearish, asked me to go watch him at the races and that’s when I became interested,” Maynard said. “He was driving a bomber at the time. “Jerry Hoffman (Hoffman Race Cars, Oronogo) built the modified and after I quit for a couple of seasons I returned in a Hoffman sport mod.” Hoffman has been very helpful and loyal throughout his racing, Maynard said.
