Joplin will field a stronger team this summer for the women’s Horton Smith Cup golf matches.
But strong enough to beat Springfield?
That’s a question the local players will have to answer on the course.
Cup competition between the 24-player teams begins Monday, with four-ball play at the Carthage Municipal Course. The annual matches conclude Tuesday with singles play at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club.
“Joplin has a strong team this year,” said Sue Browning, a team member. “It’s my fourth year and it’s the best team since I’ve been here. There’s really only one player missing, because of illness, that we would have loved to have had.
“But,” Browning added, “we were pretty badly beaten last year.”
Women’s city champion Missy Little will lead the Joplin team. She’s joined by fellow city Hall of Famer members Gingy Laas and Leigh Ann Hackney.
Newcomers like college players Raine Lounis and Natalie Bird give the Joplin team more strength, Browning noted.
Competition begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Carthage.
