BARTLESVILLE, Okla. — Patrick Bennett starred on the mound and at the plate and Barrett Noirfalise rapped a home run as the Joplin Miners boosted their pool record to 3-0 in the 49th annual Glen Winget American Legion Tournament on Friday.
The Miners, 17-12 after beating Bartlesville 7-4, seek a perfect pool record at 1:30 p.m. today against Arkansas City (Kan.).
Joplin, already winner of its pool, will play at 1 p.m. or 3:30 on Sunday in the semifinals. The championship contest is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The right-handed Bennett, a Seneca High School graduate who’ll attend Missouri Southern, settled down after a rocky start, according to Joplin coach Tucker Hagedorn. Bennett allowed seven hits, struck out 10 and the two walks he issued came in a three-run first.
“He took control after that first inning,” Hagedorn said. “He had command of his breaking pitch to set up the fast ball.”
Bennett finished with two doubles and three runs batted in at the plate.
The Miners, in the first, scored three runs. Dane Kolkmeyer reached on an error and Shayne Hoke was hit by a pitch to precede Bennett’s two-run double. Bennett then scored on an error.
Calvin Burr’s bunt single, a steal and Kolkmeyer’s single produced the first of four tallies in the second. Noirfalise then blasted his fourth homer of the campaign. Hoke’s two-out single and Bennett’s second two-bagger capped the uprising.
