Brugues earns wild card berth in USTA tourney

In a matchup of University of Tulsa teammates, top-seeded Arnau Brugues defeated Alberto Sottocorno 6-3, 3-1 (retired) in Sunday’s championship match of a Wild Card Tournament at the Millennium Tennis and Fitness Club in Joplin.
Brugues, who didn’t lose a set in his four matches, earned a direct entry into the main draw of the upcoming Men’s USTA Pro Circuit Futures Tournament, which begins later this week.
The tournament, coming to Millennium for the eighth year, begins with qualifying-round action on Friday. The championship match is set for Sunday, July 20.
Brugues, from Barcelona, Spain, reached the final with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Carlos Llames.
Sottocorno, from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and the No. 6 seed, knocked off third-seeded Will Gray 4-6, 6-1, (10-2) in the quarterfinals and second-seeded Diego Camacho 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals. Gray is another Tulsa teammate, and Camacho, the Thomas Jefferson tennis coach, also played at Tulsa.
Stefan Borg, the No. 3 seed and a player at Drury, lost his opening match to John Hoyes 4-6, 7-6 (5), (11-9).
