sports@joplinglobe.com REPUBLIC, Mo. — Springfield won 14 of 24 singles matches and halved five others Tuesday to retain possession of the Women’s Horton Smith Cup. The 161/2-71/2 advantage in singles gave Springfield a 26-10 final margin for the two days of competition. Springfield led 91/2-21/2 after Monday’s doubles play at Murder Rock Golf Club in Hollister, Mo. Joplin received singles victories from Rose Mary Grant, 4 and 2 over Marsha Hesler; Pam Borland, 4 and 3 over Flora Mitchell; Mary Packard, 7 and 6 over Stephanie Rosetta; Donna Hicks, 8 and 7 over Katie McCroskey; and Rita Bicknell, 1-up over Laura Calvert. Matches that were all-square after 18 holes involved Joplin’s Becky Bruder vs. Pat Myers, Tammy Thomas vs. Charlotte Ashcraft, Jennifer Fagan vs. Rose Foster, Leigh Ann Hackney vs. Carmen Thomas and Margaret Hennessy vs. Vicki Franks. Springfield’s winners were Ann Fuchs, Connie Thiede, Sharon Barefield, Pat Hutton, Tara Fuchs, Lindsey Johnson, Kristen Cooley, Barb Thompson, Linda Hyde, Gae Redford, Heidi Rice, Diane Peterson, Harriet Morrison and Kathy Dake. Joplin will be the host team for next year’s event. Upcoming matches Joplin will be the host for two Horton Smith Cup competitions later this summer. The Horton Smith Juniors Cup match is set for July 31 at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club. The two men’s cup matches — Horton Smith (ages 49-under) and Ky Laffoon (ages 50-over) — will be played Aug. 16-17 at Twin Hills and Eagle Creek Golf Course. Qualifying for the two Joplin teams will be held two weeks earlier.
