awelch@joplinglobe.com The Cassville Irwin Easley Post 118 American Legion baseball team has continued the solid overall performance turned in by Cassville High School in the spring. Post 118, coached again by Jerry Marple, his son Jeremy Marple and Roger Brock, will take an 18-8 record into the District 15 Tournament that opens today at Crowder College in Neosho. Post 118 is seeded second behind defending champion Neosho in the nine-team, double-elimination tourney. “Unity — they’ve played together well all season — timely hitting and speed, I believe, are team strengths,” Jerry Marple said “We’ve had some big hits at the right time.” Cassville is scheduled to face Monett at 3 p.m. Today’s noon opener includes eighth-seeded Carl Junction vs. Aurora with No. 3 Carthage playing McDonald County at 6. Three more games will be held Sunday — Fourth-seeded Miller vs. Webb City at noon, Neosho vs. the Carl Junction-Aurora winner at 3 p.m. and the first losers’ bracket game at 6. Neosho and Cassville were 8-0 and 6-2, respectively, in games used to determine seedings for the tourney. Carthage, 5-3 in district, also defeated Cassville. Jerry Marple said there is a different look from the spring with right fielder Chris Musick hailing from Wheaton and first baseman Tyler Miller and center fielder David Gilley from Blue Eye. Miller, who’s averaging nearly .300, is the RBI leader for Post 118. Three players are hitting better than .300 — catcher Jody Cavness, shortstop Kelby Haynes and third baseman Kason Koelsch. Today’s likely order for Cassville is Koelsch, Cavness, Musick (who was slowed with an ankle injury early in the summer), Miller, Haynes, second baseman Aaron Brooks, left fielder Ryan Rowley, Gilley and pitcher Michael Baker. The left-handed Baker will be a senior at Cassville High this fall. Koelsch, whose two American Legion home runs came in the same game, averaged .431 this spring for Rod Hemphill’s 13-7 Wildcats.
