rbrown@joplinglobe.com CARTHAGE, Mo. — Deb McFarland received her wish Wednesday at the Women’s Tri-State Golf Championship ... but it didn’t come easily. The Joplin golfer, playing out of Briarbrook Golf and Country Club, successfully defended her title and fulfilled her goal to keep the traveling trophy. She said she hated having to take the trophy from her home back to the annual event during Monday’s practice round. McFarland’s opening-day 1-over-par 72 on Tuesday set a course record for women at the Carthage Golf Course, and although she held a 3-stroke lead over Robin Purdie heading into the final 18 holes Wednesday, she found herself tied with the Oklahoma woman after the first hole. “Robin made up those three strokes because she birdied No. 1 and I double bogeyed it,” said McFarland, who only has been playing golf 10 years. “I started out with a double, then I doubled No. 9 and had a triple on No. 11. So, there is three holes, seven strokes and I was 8-over. Those three holes killed me.” Purdie, the director of the Wellness Center at Oklahoma State University, only could manage an 87 on the final 18 holes to end third with a 162. Nancy Isaac, who carded a 77 on Tuesday, finished second at 157. Leigh Ann Hackney, a member of the Joplin Golf Hall of Fame, finished fourth (164) and Pam Goodeyon (83-82) and Madrica Moreland (86-79) tied for fifth at 165. Kathy Dake, from Greene Hills Country Club in Willard, had the low score Wednesday with a 78 after carding an 89 on Tuesday. “It was one of those days where everything worked,” said Dake, playing in the No. 1 flight. “I got second in the championship flight one year, which is the best I have ever done in the Tri-State.” Wednesday’s win marked the third championship in the five years McFarland has been playing in the 70-year-old tournament. She was one of four players to shoot in the 70s on Wednesday. Jill West joined McFarland, Dake and Moreland after turning in a 79. “I was happy to stay in the 70s after the way I played (Wednesday),” said McFarland, whose only birdie came on the seventh hole. After shooting a 39 on the front nine — just one stroke ahead of Isaac and two ahead of Purdie — she had only one thought in mind: “Hang on,” she said. “That back nine is tough because you really have to put your tee shots in good position and I didn’t do that like I did the day before.” Although McFarland said she was excited about setting the course record, she said she struggled the past two days.
