jfryar@joplinglobe.com Experience eventually won out Wednesday. The Arizona Clash struggled with Joplin’s pitching before a six-run sixth inning broke open a close game. With that outburst, the Arizona club overcame an early deficit and secured a 10-2 victory in the Premier Baseball Junior World Series at Joe Becker Stadium. “We competed,” said Phil Cook, who’s managing the Joplin All-Stars in the 17-under tournament. “We showed we can compete (at this level of elite-team play). “Our kids hit the ball well. We played good defense. Everything was fine. ... They (the Clash) got the key hits.” Tyler Abma, who set a Missouri single-season strikeout record as a sophomore at Miller High School, mystified the Clash for three innings. Abma struck out eight while staying mostly with a fastball clocked at up to 89 mph. “He got behind some hitters in the first couple of innings,” Cook said. “He threw a lot of pitches. He was struggling with the curve in the bullpen (before the game).” A triple by Andy Guerrero — a 400-foot line drive to left-center field — set up the first Arizona run. Carthage right-hander Kyle Wickland eventually worked out of a bases-loaded jam, then pitched a scoreless fifth. The Joplin stars, drawn together from several area summer-league teams, took a 2-1 lead with the help of a pair of Arizona errors. Barrett Noirfalise of Joplin was hit by a pitch to start the two-run fourth. Mitch Albright, from Galena, reached on an error. Miami’s Brett Able singled to left field to score Noirfalise. When Joplin catcher Heath Hutchison’s pop-up was misplayed in shallow right-center, Albright scored the go-ahead run. Arizona added three runs in the seventh inning for the final margin. Guerrero had two hits for the Clash and Matt Anderson and Corey Cole contributed doubles. Jordan Krokroskia, from Baxter Springs, had two hits for the Joplin All-Stars. Four Joplin pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts. “This is a good group,” Cook said of the Joplin stars. “They’re deep (in talent). I’d like to have had them in a couple of tournaments before playing here. Cohesiveness is a big part of team sports and you have to build it over time.”
