sports@joplinglobe.com Three straight wins in pool play assured the Midwest Nationals a first-round bye in bracket action today at the Premier Baseball Junior World Series The Nationals edged the Dallas Barracudas 4-3 Thursday to secure a solid position in the series. Rocky Renfro, a right-hander from Tulsa, overcame a tough first inning, when he allowed all three Dallas runs. Renfro gave up seven hits, just three after the first inning, and struck out 10. Cory Kyle, from Stoutland, Mo., was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning. He stole second base and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Zach Craig (Rogersville). Chance Sossamon (Webb City) doubled home a run for the Nationals and Chris Sartin (Rogersville) went 3-for-3. “We didn’t make a whole lot of noise (on offense), but then we’re facing some pretty good pitching in this tournament,” said John Hartley, the Nationals’ coach. The Midwest Nationals beat the Columbia (Texas) Angels 3-2 and the South Texas Sliders Orange 13-8 on Wednesday to start pool play. A five-run outburst in the fourth inning sealed the victory over the Sliders. Kyle hit a three-run homer and Shayne Hoke (Joplin) added a two-run shot, his team-record 12th of the summer. Sossamon allowed two runs in the first four innings to pick up the victory. Brett Richardson (Webb City) pitched two innings of relief and picked up the victory as the Nationals rallied past the Columbia Angels. Patrick Bennett (Seneca) threw the seventh for the save. Sartin sparked the offense with a pair of hits. Hartley said Kyle would be the likely starter for the Nationals today. “He’s been our best performer all summer. He’ll go out there and try to get us into the round of eight,” Hartley said.
