sports@joplinglobe.com The Carthage All-Stars turned heads Thursday during their 13-1 drubbing of Twin City in the first round of pool play action of the Missouri State Little League Championships at Sunny Jim Park. The game appeared, at least in the beginning, as if it were going to be close as both teams went three up, three down in the first. However, things changed in the second when Carthage’s Nathan Reid slugged a no-doubt two-run home run to right field. Reid’s blast preceded a four-run burst in the second that included a two-run error when Dalton Stafford’s sharp line drive to second was misplayed and the ball ended up in right field. The 4-0 lead was all Carthage starter Drew Bridges would need as he breezed through 32/3 innings of two-hit ball, striking out eight along the way. The score didn’t stand long, however, after Carthage sent 14 batters to the plate in the third inning and scored nine runs to make it 13-0. Twin City scored its only run in the fourth, but Taylor Wood was caught stealing to end the game due to the 10-run rule. “I was proud of the way our team played tonight,” Carthage coach Mark Bridges said. “I thought our pitchers threw the ball real well and our hitters really did a good job putting the ball in play. That’s what we’re capable of doing — hitting the ball and putting it in play.” Reid led Carthage at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance and fell just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Carthage didn’t have an easy road to the state tournament. It was forced to go through several tough local teams at district before finally defeating Joplin North for the district title. Thursday’s victory certainly was key for Carthage as it improved to 7-2 in the playoffs and moves closer to earning a trip to Indianapolis to compete for the right to enter the Little League World Series. There still are several hurdles in the way. Carthage now must get past LaCoMo East tonight at 6 p.m. LaCoMo East dropped the Daniel Boone All-Stars 7-2 in earlier action on Thursday and figure to bring a potent lineup into tonight’s game. “We know there are good teams here at state,” Bridges said. “We know we have a tough opponent (on Friday), but we feel that if we bring our A game and play the way we are capable of playing, we will be all right.”
