awelch@joplinglobe.com WEBB CITY, Mo. — The Joplin Sports Authority All-Stars turned in a tantalizing performance on Friday. They seemed on the verge of breaking through offensively against the Rawlings Prospects several times. But right-hander Erik Shannahan, backed by a stout defense, refused to give up the clutch hit and stopped the All-Stars 5-0 at Barnes Field in the consolation bracket of the 17-and-under Premier Baseball Junior World Series. Mix in sloppy defensive play and All-Stars head coach Phil Cook was left a bit confused, as well as disappointed. “We made some miscues (fielding and running the bases),” Cook said. “But it wouldn’t have made any difference because we didn’t score. “They (the St. Louis-based Prospects) made several outstanding defensive plays,” Cook said. “Their pitcher threw strikes.” Rawlings scored just one earned run — it came in the first inning on a triple by Keenen Maddox and a single by Brannon Champagne — against All-Stars right-hander Justin Kemp. “We just weren’t crisp. We didn’t seem focused,” Cook said. “But the bottom line was that we didn’t get clutch hits.” Shannahan, a 6-foot-3, 175-pounder, will be a junior at Collinsville (Ill.) High School. He allowed six hits, struck out eight and walked one. “The slider was my best pitch,” Shannahan said. “But I probably used the fastball and curve equally as much.” Shannahan, whose grandfather Dave Shannahan attended Branson High School and Drury University before coaching basketball in the St. Louis area at the prep and junior college level, said he’s 9-1 this summer with the loss to the Midwest Nationals. Barrett Noirfalise reached Shannahan for a double and a single. Stephen Poston, Jordan Krokroskia, Nick Henson and Bo Bergen added singles. But, again, the All-Stars stranded seven runners and three times left two.
