rbrown@joplinglobe.com Putting was a factor for both the leader and the runner-up during the opening day of the Twin Hills Invitational on Friday ... but for different reasons. Joplin’s Todd Pefferman took the lead with a 5-under-par 67 while Carl Junction’s Timothy Old was in second with a 69 at the 55th annual amateur event at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club. For Pefferman, putting was a positive factor. “I didn’t hit the ball very well, but I putted the lights out,” said Pefferman, who played golf at Missouri Southern State University where he graduated in 1999. “I probably had 10 or 11 one putts.” Old sang a different tune. “I missed two 5-footers (putts), which could have tied me for the lead,” said Old, who won a scorecard playoff to finish second in this past year’s tournament. Pefferman and Old were the only golfers in the 165-player field to finish the first round in the 60s. Joplin’s Kyle Long, who won the tournament in 2001 and 2003, was among only three other players to shoot under par with a 71. The others were Ryan Westhoff, Louisburg, Kan., and Randy Hurst, Tulsa, Okla. The 2005 champion, Glenn Keeton from Riverton, Kan., was among the four players to shoot par. Others were David Byrne, Frank Jacobs and Pete Schleicher. Kevin Roller, the 1989 champion from Purdy, shot a 73. Pefferman, who attended Monett High School, has reunited with former Missouri Southern teammates for the tournament. “I am playing with Chris Mitchell and Kevin Walker and the three of us played together at Southern,” he said. “We had a good time.” Pefferman, opening with a 2-under-par on the back nine holes, and shooting 3-under on the front nine, said his 67 is one of his best rounds ever on the Twin Hills course.
