jfryar@joplinglobe.com There’s no lack of motivation for the Missouri Southern cross country teams. Southern’s men and women are both defending MIAA champions. They’re also in pursuit of larger goals this fall. Missouri Southern will be the host team for both the NCAA Division II South Central Regional (on Nov. 3) and the D-II national meet (Nov. 17). “There’s definitely some added incentive and motivation to be in that meet,” said Patty Vavra, Southern women’s coach. “You don’t want to host that meet and not have a chance to compete. “That (qualifying for nationals) is a goal for the year. It’s helped in the motivation and training this summer for our athletes.” The Missouri Southern men are favored to repeat as MIAA champions, according to a poll of conference coaches. The Lions received the maximum seven first-place votes. Pittsburg State edged Southern 45-44 in the women’s preseason poll. The Gorillas outpolled Southern 5-3 in No. 1 votes. The Lion men have won six of the last seven conference titles. They return a veteran group led by seniors Kyle Davis, Ryan Arthur and Dustin Miller and junior Dustin Dixon. In the 2006 MIAA meet, Dixon was third, Arthur ninth and Davis 10th. Brett Musser, a senior-to-be who was eighth in the conference meet, transferred to the University of Missouri for academic reasons. But Miller, from Carthage, returns after redshirting last season. “I have some good kids here and some good recruits coming in,” said Tom Rutledge, Southern men’s coach. “They’ve had a great summer training. We expect a very good season. “I tell our guys not to believe in polls. If we do our job, we’ll win.” The Southern women return their top five runners from the MIAA title team. But Vavra isn’t about to disagree with the poll.
