Some lucky individual will get two tickets to the 2008 U.S. Open in La Jolla, Calif., at a “golf ball drop” at the Carl McConnell Memorial Golf Classic at Loma Linda Country Club on Friday. The tickets are being provided by the U.S.G.A. At 1 p.m., the bucket of an Empire District Electric Co. boom truck will be filled with golf balls that have corresponding numbers on them. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. The balls will be dropped on the putting green and the individual with the numbered ball that goes into the hole or is closest to the cup will win the tickets. Proceeds from the tournament and golf-ball drop will benefit the community Support Services G.O.A.L.S program. For more information, contact Melissa Eiken at 624-4515, ext. 204. Ken Essary claimsShow-Me A feature LEBANON, Mo. — Ken Essary, the series founder, won the A feature in the late-model Show-Me Racin’ Series during stock-car races at Midway Speedway on Friday night. Essary, Cape Fair, Mo., won for the first time this season. He beat Jeremy Kelley, Walnut Grove, Mo., and Leslie Essary, Crane, Mo. Rolla’s Eric Hudson and Joplin’s Tony Hatfield won the main event in modified and Legends Cars classes, respectively. Completing the A feature winners — all from Southwest Missouri — were Ben Solberg, Springfield, factory stock; Dusty Rhoads, Lebanon, factory stock; Eric Todd, Falcon, winged sprints, and Jack Lancaster, Urbana, B modified. Webb City softball starts up Monday WEBB CITY, Mo. — Softball practice begins at 8 a.m. Monday for Webb City High School athletes.
