sports@joplinglobe.com INDIANAPOLIS — In a do-or-die game between Missouri and Kansas state champions on Tuesday, Carthage shut out Cherokee 6-0 in the Little League Midwest Region. Carthage, winning for the first time in three outings at the Indianapolis tournament, goes against Minnesota (2-1) today in an effort to advance to the semifinals. The Midwest Region winner goes on to the Little League World Series. Cherokee ended its run at 0-4. Jordan Musser gave up four hits in going the distance on the mound for Carthage, who turned in timely hitting and sparkled defensively with two double plays. “This was a do-or-die situation,” said third baseman Cade Harris, who led the Missouri team with two RBI and also scored a run. Carthage coach Mark Bridges said that although his team is still in the tournament mathematically, there can be no more losses. “We’re still in it but I’m not for sure how it all falls out,” he said. “Tomorrow (today) is a must-win.” With the game scoreless through three innings, Carthage came alive in the fourth. After Alec Doubet reached first on an error to start the bottom of the fourth, Jonathan Mills singled to center to move Doubet to third. Harris took advantage of a gratuitous bounce when his hard-hit liner to second hopped off the lip of the infield and over the head of second baseman Travis Trayer. “I saw it after I hit it and I was like, just please don’t field it,” said Harris of the go-ahead RBI. “Then it took a funny hop over his head, which turned it into a hit.” Doubet scored the first run and Carthage tacked on two more after Mills scored on a wild pitch and Harris on an error. The Missouri squad capped the scoring with three additional runs in the fifth inning. “It feels pretty good for us,” Bridges said of the win. “We had a one-run game last game (a 13-12 loss to Nebraska on Sunday), a heartbreaker. So we needed to come out today and win a game.” Coach Joe Ulery pointed out that the errors made during the tourney were uncharacteristic of his Cherokee team. “That’s kind of how the whole tournament’s been,” he said. “I guess we just ran into some good teams. I still think we played better and better each game; we just couldn’t get it all together. But, that’s part of it ... part of baseball.
