NEO to lean on its height, natural ability

MIAMI, Okla. — Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College is scheduled to launch its volleyball season today in the Butler County Community College Invitational with a roster that contains definite area flavor.
NEO competed in 2006 at the NJCAA Division II level for the first time and finished 11-12 under coach Eric Iverson.
Veterans for the Lady Norse include 5-foot-8 middle hitter Abby Collier of Carl Junction and 5-8 outside hitter Jamie Crane of Wheaton.
“We’re an extremely young team with only the two sophomores,” Iverson said. “But we have some size and a lot of natural ability.
“Collier and Crane saw considerable playing time as freshmen. They provide us with a solid leadership core to build around.”
Collier recorded 99 kills, 19 aces, 102 digs and 26 blocks in 69 games a season ago. Crane, in 54 games, logged 61 kills, 17 digs, 8 aces and 8 blocks.
More area products include Jordan Bickett (5-6) of Webb City, Megan Copeland (5-5) of Seneca, Stacey Peek (5-11) of Webb City and Amber Qualls (5-7) of Baxter Springs.
Also on the roster are Nathalia Araujo (6-0), Tayverie Hamilton (5-9), Rachel Moreno (5-3), Cheryl Steed (5-9) and Karina Trindade (5-10).
Araujo joins the volleyball squad after a stellar career in basketball.
“Nathalia is a natural athlete with great leaping ability,” Iverson said. “She should be a real force on the front line.”
NEO faces Independence (Kan.) Community College at 3 p.m. and Butler of El Dorado (Kan.) at 5 today in pool matches.
Pool play continues Saturday with the Lady Norse meeting Dodge City (Kan.) at 9 a.m. The fourth-place teams in pools A and B and the third-place teams will face elimination at 1 p.m. Then the runner-up and first-place teams in the pools will clash.
The Lady Norse open the home portion of their schedule by entertaining Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College at 6 p.m. on Sept. 10 in the Student Activities Center.
