Llewellyn keys Southern's win; men bow in OT

Nikki Llewellyn added to her scoring record at Missouri Southern State University Friday, posting the 39th and 40th goals of her career as the Lions kicked off the 2008 women’s soccer campaign with a 2-1 victory over the Abilene Christian Wildcats in two overtimes at Hal Bodon Field.
Southern fell behind when Jackie Gentile headed in a shot off an assist from Jordan Reese in the 46th minute. ACU held that lead until Llewellyn, a senior, pulled the Lions even on an assist from Michelle Dimza with a little over three minutes left in regulation.
Llewellyn applied the clincher in the 104th minute off a pass from Shannon Kuhn.
Southern, with Llewellyn making seven attempts, outshot the Wildcats 20-14, including a 10-3 bulge in the second half. The Lions held a 10-9 edge in shots on goal.
Lions’ goalkeeper Lisa Senkle and ACU goalie Chrissy Lawson each logged eight saves.
Missouri Southern returns to action Sunday, traveling to Searcy, Ark., for a 1 p.m. match with Harding University.
Southern men lose in OT
Alberto Escovar’s shot from 10 yards out in the fourth minute of the first overtime gave the Texas A&M International Dustdevils a 2-1 soccer victory over the Missouri Southern State University Lions Friday.
The game, the season opener for both schools,. was played in Tahlequah, Okla.
Southern broke a scoreless tie in the 75th minute on freshman Kevin Aubuchon’s goal from 15 yards out on an assist by Nate Evans.
Texas A&M International tied the score in the 84th minute on a 30-yard free kick by Chrstian Salazar.
Although outshot 22-10 overall and 13-3 on goal, the Lions stayed close all the way.
Goalkeeper Jon Hansen saved 10 shots for the Lions while Luis Rincon stopped two shots fro the Dustdevils.
