Lion offense starts hot • Jordan Patton returned a kickoff 47 yards;

His 26 completions gave him 701 for his career, second in league history behind Kasey Waterman’s 730. • Missouri Southern’s 551 yards total offense was its most against an NCAA Division II opponent since gaining 601 yards in a 40-33 home loss against Central Missouri on Sept. 18, 2004. • The Lions won their season opener for the fifth straight year while Harding lost its opener for the first time since 2001. • MIAA teams went 6-1 in season debuts, with the only loss by preseason favorite Northwest Missouri State. The No. 3-ranked Bearcats lost at home to No. 8 Abilene Christian 44-27 as ACU quarterback Billy Malone threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns. Truman State’s opener against Missouri S&T was postponed and may be rescheduled later this season, and Nebraska-Omaha does not open its season until this weekend.
