WILLARD, Mo. — Webb City’s soccer team shut out New Covenant 2-0 to claim the championship of the Willard Tournament on Saturday and complete an unblemished two-day run.
The Cardinals reached the final with a 5-1 victory against Monett on Saturday morning after a 2-0 decision Friday against Bolivar.
Webb City will take its 5-0 record to Monett for a 4:30 p.m. match on Tuesday.
Michael Handley scored three goals, with one assist, against Monett and provided assists to both goals in the title match.
The Cardinals closed out the scoring against New Covenant in the first half. Manny Alfaro scored at the 20-minute mark and TJ Martin added a goal at 3:40.
Martin and Drew Henderson also scored against Monett. The Cards led 2-1 at intermission.
Goalie Justin Boudreaux had nine saves against the Warriors and three against Monett.
CROSS COUNTRY
CHC runners sweep
NIXA, Mo. — College Heights Christian runners swept Class 1 honors in the Southwest Missouri Cross Country Coaches Association meet.
Emily Beaver won the girls 5,000-meter race in 19 minutes. 34.46 seconds.
Teammate Lacie Sparlin was second in the race.
Ethan Beaver won the Class 1 boys race in 16:06.58, finishing 2.72 seconds ahead of teammate Caleb Hoover.
Other girls winners were Rebecca Senn, Kickapoo, Class 4; Liz Reida, Nixa, Class 3, and Kelsie Hutsell, Willow Springs, Class 2.
Mandolin Smith was the top runner for Carthage, placing 12th in Class 3.
Other boys winners were Rick Elliott, Kickapoo, Class 4; Jack Taylor, Nixa, Class 3, and John Williams, East Newton, Class 2.
Derek Mendell of Carthage was third in the Class 2 race.
