MSSU spikers win one, lose one in tournament

Missouri Southern dropped its opening match to Dallas Baptist, then charged back to sweep past Central Oklahoma on Friday in the Missouri Southern Invitational volleyball tournament.

The Lions, 2-4 overall, play two more matches today. They face Midwestern (Texas) State at 10 a.m. and Drury University at 4 p.m.

Dallas Baptist scored the final five points to win the decisive fifth game 15-13 in the opener for the Lions.

Jeanna Feldman had 18 kills for the Lions and Amelia Judge had 15 kills and a .538 attack percentage. Sarah Joles had 39 assists and Kari Hammerbacher led with 18 digs, two more than Feldman. Judge also had six of the assist blocks.

Lauren Secord led Dallas Baptist (4-3) with 25 kills and Vickie Mundell had 49 assists.

The Lions came back to win 25-18, 25-11, 25-18 against Central Oklahoma.

Stephanie Williams had 10 kills for the Lions, who hit .374 as a team with just five errors. Joles had 29 assists and Hammerbacher and Williams 13 digs each. Judge and Hammerbacher had three service aces each.

PSU wins pair

DENTON, Texas — Pittsburg (Kan.) State opened the seven-team Texas Woman’s University Volleyball Tournament with two wins.

PSU defeated Texas Wesleyan 25-13, 25-9, 25-19 and Southeastern Oklahoma 25-22, 25-13, 25-12.

Pittsburg State senior LIndsay Quall had nine kills against Texas Wesleyan. In the finale, junior Pamela Cartagena led PSU with 12 kills and 19 digs.

The Gorillas wind up play today against Cameron at 9 a.m. and Texas Woman’s at 12:30 p.m.
