Golf: This is no longer just your father’s game
Today’s amateurs may use whatever is in the bags of their professional heroes. But not solely because Tiger, Phil or Ernie plays those clubs, but rather that the irons and woods are more user-friendly. Indeed, the biggest differences between the clubs used by average golfers who buy new equipment and what the big name pros play are found in the tweaking of lofts and lies or in the use of experimental shafts.
Golf is no longer the game your father and grandfather played. Small-faced, blade irons, drivers made of real wood and golf balls that smiled back at you if you looked too hard at them are relics. Those have gone the way of wooden shafts and feathery golf balls.
The high-tech genie has been released from the bottle and will never go back in. Today pros put their careers in the hands of R&D and their faith in investment irons, exotic metals and other space-age materials, graphite shafts and golf balls designed to fly higher or lower and farther.
It all started in the mid-1980s.
Benefit tournament
A three-person scramble will be held by the Joplin Fraternal Order of Police on Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Carthage Municipal Golf Course to raise funds for scholarships, equipment and training for the Explorer Program.
This is the fourth annual tournament named for Officer Tim Nelson, who died of injuries suffered during the line of duty on Sept. 13, 2004. Nelson had been involved with the Explorer Program.
The entry fee for a team is $375.
Club championship
Club champions will be crowned Sept. 13-14 for Twin Hills Golf and Country Club, Briarbrook Country Club, Eagle Creek Golf Club and the Joplin Golf Club of Schifferdecker Municipal Golf Course.
