It’s time for Ozark bass to feed ravenously

In the cool grey dawn of the first day of September, he will retrieve his first downed bird, and I hope to heck he brings it back without swallowing it.

By the time snow is driven on a north wind and mallards fall into some protected pocket fooled by my decoys, he will be a veteran. He’ll get that way by the learning and the mistakes made in grain fields and mosquito marshes in September, finding doves and blue-winged teal. I will report here on the best of his efforts, and not say a thing about the worst of it.

If Baron lives up to his promise, he will be something like the great dog Rambunctious who was my long time companion and his great grandfather. Unfortunately Rambunctious reigned at a time when I was younger, and more patient.

Calling paratroopers

If you know a World War II paratrooper, I would like to know about him. My uncle’s 85th birthday is near the end of October, and we will celebrate it this year, as we did when his book “Ridge-Runner” was published a few years ago, by having a big dinner somewhere and inviting his fellow paratroopers to join us.

Norten was in the 101st Airborne at Bastogne, Belgium, and then through many other battlefields into Germany until the war ended. If you haven’t read his book about his life and his service, you should find a copy. It is a great book, one which General David Petraeus paid tribute to with a personal invitation to my uncle years ago before the general went to Iraq.

Any paratrooper of World War II will be honored at that dinner. The last time we did it, we had 24 paratroopers there. It would be nice to have that many again, or more. The date hasn’t been selected yet; I hope to have some help with publicizing it and having the dinner just before Veteran’s Day, close to Norten’s birthday. Next week, I’ll let you know more about that event and about the book we intend to complete about Ozark World War II veterans.

If you know a WWII paratrooper, help him join us in honor of my uncle’s 85th birthday in a couple of months.
